QUITO – The Ecuadorian soccer world mourns the tragic passing of Marco Angulo, 22, a promising young player for the national team and a FC Cincinnati player on loan at LDU Quito. Angulo died Monday evening from serious injuries sustained in a car accident on October 7 on the Rumiñahui highway, southeast of Quito.
The accident, which involved the car in which he was a passenger, also killed the driver and Roberto Cabezas, a former youth teammate now playing for Independiente Juniors. Angulo suffered severe head injuries and a pulmonary contusion; the young player was placed in an artificial coma, but his injuries proved fatal. The news of his death was confirmed by the Ecuadorian Football Association and sparked deep grief among fans and teammates.
Angulo was considered a talent on the rise, appreciated for both his technical skills and his commitment on the pitch. After playing for the national champions LDU Quito, he was enjoying an important international experience with FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer.
