The City Council of Naples has given the green light to the executive project for the redevelopment of Via Boccaccio, one of the historic arteries of Posillipo, among the most fascinating and delicate areas of the city.
The project, long-awaited by residents, involves a total cost of 4,6 million euros and is part of a broader program implemented by the Administration to improve liveability, urban decorum and quality of the hill's public spaces. The work, which will last about twelve months, will be assigned through a public tender that will be announced by the end of April.
The project is supported by two main financing channels: the road works, which include the reconstruction of the head road and sidewalks, will be financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank, while the intervention on the green component - with the replanting of trees - is part of a program of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
“We are facing one of the most anticipated interventions for Posillipo" commented Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. “Redeveloping Via Boccaccio means restoring value to a symbolic place in the city and improving its daily usability.” The councilors for Mobility and Greenery have emphasized how the works are part of an integrated urban regeneration plan, which has already involved via Orazio and via Petrarca, and which aims to progressively overcome the degradation that has affected the area for years.
The intervention on via Boccaccio represents, in particular, the beginning of a more structured path dedicated to the redevelopment of tree-lined streets, carried out in synergy with the bodies responsible for landscape protection. In detail, the project includes the complete resurfacing of the road, with the removal of old layers of asphalt, the arrangement of manholes and drains, the cleaning of the pipes for the disposal of rainwater and the renewal of signage.
The sidewalks will also be completely redeveloped, with a new altimetric configuration, the laying of porphyry paving, the elimination of architectural barriers, the maintenance of stone parapets and the adaptation of public lighting.
Particular attention will be paid to urban greenery: the pine trees currently present, often a source of structural problems, will be removed and replaced with a new row of holm oaks – 84 in total – which will be planted on both sides of the road, helping to redefine the landscape identity of the area.

The idea of redeveloping via Boccaccio is good, but I wonder if the work will really only last twelve months. There are many projects that have been promised and then not realized. I hope this time it will be different.
