Fifteen of the most prestigious parks and gardens of the Ministry of Culture, such as the English Garden of the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Park of Miramare Castle, Villa D'Este and the Boboli Gardens, will be among the protagonists of the initiative "Appointment in the Garden" promoted by APGI - Association of Parks and Gardens of Italy.
The event, supported by Ales Spa and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and ANCI – National Association of Italian Municipalities, will take place on June 1 and 2. Now in its seventh edition, the event offers an extraordinary opportunity to rediscover our “living cultural heritage” with openings and special activities in over two hundred Italian parks and gardens. This event, born in synergy with the Rendez-vous aux jardins, takes place simultaneously in over 20 European countries, each year with a different theme. For the 2024 edition, the central theme will be “The five senses in the garden”.
A Successful Initiative
With over 300 events, “Appuntamento in Giardino” is now a consolidated event, much appreciated by the public. This success is also due to the growing awareness that gardens represent authentic “open-air museums” thanks to their inestimable historical, artistic, botanical and landscape value. Ludovico Ortona, President of APGI, underlines how the event allows the public to appreciate the extraordinary beauty of the historical and artistic heritage of Italian gardens. Many of these gardens are the subject of investment 2.3 of the PNRR of the MiC, also focused on regeneration and redevelopment.
Investments and Interventions
The overall investment of the PNRR of the Ministry of Culture for historic parks and gardens is 300 million euros, distributed in three areas of intervention: the restoration and enhancement of 126 historic parks and gardens for 190 million euros, the restoration and enhancement of 5 significant historic parks and gardens for 100 million euros, and a census of over 5000 parks and gardens and training of 1260 art gardeners for 10 million euros. This is what was highlighted by Angelantonio Orlando, General Director of the Mission Unit for the Implementation of the PNRR of the MiC.
Collaboration and Commitment
The program involves numerous actors: gardeners, botanists, landscapers, private owners and public managers, as well as important foundations and associations. All together they aim to tell the universe of the garden, highlighting its fragility, cultural and environmental relevance, and importance for the well-being of individuals and the community. The event will allow the public to explore various places, from large historic gardens to small amateur gardens, from botanical gardens to more contemporary contexts. Fabio Tagliaferri, President and CEO of Ales, underlines the strategic role of the company in promoting an advanced vision of care and enhancement of historic gardens as a founding member of APGI.

Among the gardens of the Ministry of Culture involved in the initiative are the English Garden of the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Park of the Miramare Castle, Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, Villa d'Este, Villa Lante, Castle of Agliè, Villa Medicea della Petraia, Villa Medicea di Cerreto Guidi, Villa Medicea di Castello, Boboli Gardens, Garden of the Royal Palace in Genoa, Tempietto sul Clitunno, Villa del Colle del Cardinale, Castello Bufalini, and the Park of the National Museum of Villa Pisani.
