“There is an incendiary direction” at the origin of the fires that have destroyed 700 homes since last Friday hectares of forest in the municipality of Montaguto, in the province of Avellino.
Marcello Zecchino, the mayor of the small mountain town on the border with the province of Foggia, has no doubts and, tearfully, lashes out against the arsonists. “The fires were set in inaccessible, almost impenetrable areas and the hand of man is clear: let them be damned”.
Three days later the fires were put out thanks to the use of three helicopters and dozens of men among them firefighters, Civil Protection, Mountain Community, volunteers and carabinieri of the Ariano Irpino company.
The most critical hours are on Saturday when the flames they approached rural homes and farms. Since this morning the firefighters have been working to clear the areas attacked by the flames, while the arrest of a foreign citizen by the Carabinieri has not found official confirmation.
