The Sir William and Lady Hamilton exhibition opens in Naples. The Gallerie d'Italia in Naples, in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo, will open the exhibition to the public from October 25th until March 2nd, 2025. Curated by Francesco Leone and Fernando Mazzocca, the exhibition is a tribute to one of the most influential figures in 18th-century Neapolitan culture: William Hamilton.
An icon of eighteenth-century culture
William Hamilton, known for his role as English ambassador to the court of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, became famous not only in the field of diplomacy but also as an antiquarian and volcanologist. His passions and his work found fertile ground in the “enlightened” Naples of the time. The exhibition highlights his life and intellectual commitment through seventy-eight works, including paintings, ceramics, sculptures and other artefacts, from renowned national and international museums.
Lady Emma Hamilton's Contribution
Alongside the figure of William, the exhibition also delves into the legendary figure of Lady Emma Hamilton. Her presence and personal events intertwine with those of Sir William, offering a further glimpse into the fascinating era in which they lived. The exhibition is supported by the British Embassy in Rome, the Italian Embassy in London and enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Naples and the University of Naples Federico II.
