THEChristmas tree positioned in the symbolic place of the “Massacre of San Gennaro” was destroyed two days ago by a Molotov cocktail, but migrants and residents mobilized to rebuild it.
In Castel Volturno, unknown persons set fire to the Christmas tree located at kilometer 43 of the Domiziana state road, the same place where a Camorra massacre against African workers took place in 2008. According to witnesses, two young men on a motorbike stopped in front of the tree, throwing a Molotov cocktail before fleeing. The fire quickly engulfed the base of the tree, leaving significant damage.
Mayor Pasquale Marrandino, together with representatives of the municipal administration and the bishop of the diocese of Caserta, Monsignor Pietro Lagnese, returned to the site to reiterate the importance of the destroyed symbol. Marrandino assured that a complaint has been filed with the authorities, but stressed that the area is not equipped with video surveillance, making investigations difficult.
The tree, donated by the Montemaggiore Consortium as part of the pine forest regeneration, had a special value, as the mayor explained: “That tree represented a symbol of peace, communion and brotherhood, right in the place marked by one of the most brutal pages of our history, the massacre of San Gennaro. Someone chose to dirty again a place that has become the symbol of a reborn Castel Volturno.”

It is truly sad to know that such an important symbol as the Christmas tree has been destroyed in such a significant place. The community must remain united to rebuild it and not let violence prevail, I hope that the investigations will bring results.
