The judicial investigation will clarify the causes and establish any responsibilities for the death of Adrienne Vaughan, the 45 year old American tourist from New York who died last night in Amalfi following the tragic accident that occurred in the waters of the Furore Fjord.
The president of the Bloomsbury USA (the American subsidiary of the London-based publisher of the Harry Potter novels) along with her family, her husband Mike White and their two children, a 12-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, had booked a boat trip to discover the beauty of the coast. And yesterday the dream turned into tragedy.
A terrible one collision between their pleasure boat, a nine-meter-long Sorrento gozzo, rented with a skipper, against the bow of the Tortuga, a 45-meter-long tourist sailing vessel for exclusive events on the route between the islands of the Gulf of Naples and the Amalfi Coast, on board which there were approximately 85 people.
American and German tourists who were attending a wedding banquet in the middle of the sea. Following the strong impact, Vaughan was thrown between the two hulls and the rotating propellers, causing deep wounds on various parts of her body. Her husband also suffered consequences, albeit slight, with a dislocated shoulder and some lacerated contused wounds.
Miraculously unharmed, the children were literally in a panic at seeing their mother unconscious in the sea. In a short time, some sailors who were nearby arrived, the first to provide assistance and recover the woman.
The Carabinieri together with the men of the Coast Guard who are conducting the investigations, under the coordination of the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, have begun to listen to all the witnesses and naturally, as per procedure, they have subjected the two skippers (the one of the sailing vessel where the victim's family was and the one of the Tortuga) to the necessary tests to establish their ability to drive at the moment of impact.
