This morning, an inmate attacked officers on duty during a routine inspection. The man, who has already committed similar incidents in other penitentiary institutions in Campania, reacted violently, brandishing an iron bar taken from the bed and threatening to throw a pot of boiling oil at the officers.

Despite attempts at mediation, the intervention of special agents was necessary to block the prisoner and transfer him to the security cells. The attack caused injuries to some agents, who had to seek medical care at the Emergency Room of the “Frangipane-Bellizzi” hospital.

The episode has once again brought the spotlight on the critical issues of the prison Ariano Irpino, in particular on the management of prisoners with behavioral problems and the lack of adequate safety measures.

The Uilpa union, through its representative Stefano Sorice, denounces the situation: "Once again the problems of the Irpinia institute emerge, linked above all to the management of troublemaking inmates and the lack of transfers to other prisons. On the contrary, the number of inmates with behavioral problems transferred to Ariano Irpino from other penitentiary institutions in Campania is increasing."
