Campania is among the regions of Italy with the highest risk of infiltration of organized crime in the tourism sector. This is what emerges from the data of the Demoskopika research.
Article Key Points
Infiltration into the tourism sector
Of the five confiscated tourist and hotel facilities in the country, one is in Campania. Over the course of a year, 155 anti-mafia interdiction measures were issued in the region. Furthermore, the number of requests to initiate investigations related to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) adds a further layer of complexity. The combination of these factors places Campania among the Italian regions with the highest risk of criminal infiltration in the tourist economy, as underlined by the preview of the Ansa agency.
Regional risk assessment
Campania leads the ranking of regions at risk with a score of 122 points, based on several sensitive indicators. Among these, the number of confiscated hotels and restaurants stands out, which in the region amount to 67, representing 21.8% of the confiscated structures at the national level. The almost two thousand requests for anti-mafia investigations linked to the PNRR and the 155 interdiction measures of 2023 further illustrate the situation. In addition, there are 16 thousand suspicious financial transactions, including reports of suspicious transactions (SOS) linked to the risk of organized crime.
Classification of regions
Alongside Campania, the group of regions at high risk of infiltration includes Lombardy with 119.3 points, Lazio with 117.7 points, followed by Puglia, Sicily, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Piedmont and Calabria with slightly lower scores. On the contrary, Valle d'Aosta, Molise, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Basilicata, Umbria and Trentino Alto Adige are considered among the regions at lower risk, recording scores below 94 points.
Finally, the concerns expressed by local tourism operators in Naples stand out, in relation to the possible increase in the tourist tax, which could put already booked tours in difficulty, according to what was reported by travel agencies and accommodation facilities.
