Starting from Piazza Garibaldi with an initially peaceful atmosphere, the pro-Palestine procession quickly took on more confrontational overtones.
The organizers had planned a very specific route, but once they reached the historic center, a group of more radicalized demonstrators decided to deviate from it, heading towards forbidden areas and more closely monitored by the police.
Waving flags of far-left movements and chanting against the police and Israeli policies, the protesters openly defied the authorities, trying to break through the cordons placed to protect the areas reserved for the G7 Defense.
The police, deployed in riot gear, responded with determination, using tear gas and charges to disperse the most violent protesters.
The clashes were concentrated in particular in Piazza Carità, where a group of protesters tried to create a barricade using improvised objects. The police responded with new charges, managing to push the protesters back and restore order.
Despite the attempts of the police to keep the situation under control, the clashes continued for several hours, with moments of high tension.
During the day, numerous injuries were reported, both among protesters and among the police. Some protesters were arrested on charges of resisting a public official and damage to property.
After moments of tension in Piazza Carità with the police, the demonstrators headed back towards the old town, to Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, away from the area forbidden to the procession because it is too close to Palazzo Reale, where the G7 Defense works are underway.
The protesters chanted chants such as “fascist police, murderous police” and held up a sign that read “Israel, murderous state.” Some waved flags of Potere al Popolo, Cau (Collettivo Autonomo Universitario) and the Ex Opg Je so pazzo social center.
The demonstrators, shortly after 18 pm, broke up the march, claiming what they say was a success: "More than 2000 people - they claim in a statement - in the square in Naples violated the security device imposed by the Police Headquarters to clearly say that the G7 of war is not welcome. A determined multitude that clearly said that Naples repudiates the war, the genocide of the Palestinian people: Crosetto and the ministers of the G7 in Naples will not pass. We will push your wars back".
