With the start of the new football season, Maurizio Sarri, former coach of Juventus, Napoli and Lazio, confesses in an interview given to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
His desire to return to the bench is palpable, even if the decision will depend on many variables. “I hope to return before January”, said Sarri, adding that his return will be influenced by the offers he receives, his personal motivations and the call that will be able to give him the most adrenaline.Despite his age, the Tuscan coach does not see himself at the end of his career: "I don't see myself at the last dance. I still want to coach and I think I can still give something." Sarri then confided in a secret dream that, although he defined it as “crazy”, particularly intrigues him: “The bench of the Boca Juniors, It would be a great ending. A few games at the Bombonera would be a unique experience."
During the interview, Sarri He also commented on the tendency of modern football to prefer younger coaches, highlighting how, last season, it was coaches of his age who won the three European competitions: “Ancelotti in the Champions League, Gasperini in the Europa League and Mendilibar in the Conference League. The same goes for de la Fuente, coach of the Spanish champions of Europe”.
Speaking about Cristiano Giuntoli, current sporting director of Juventus, Sarri expressed great esteem, showing trust in him: "Giuntoli will certainly be able to lead Juventus to success. I don't know how long it will take, but he will succeed. I respect him a lot, so I'm sure he had his reasons for such a drastic turnaround."
When asked to comment on the rumours that he would be on the Milan bench, Sarri preferred to avoid speculation: "It seems bad to talk about it at this time, it needs respect. Paulo Fonseca is a good coach and a high-level man. I met him in person: he is at the beginning of a journey and it is right that he stays calm."
The interview ended with an appreciation for Jannik Sinner, an Italian tennis talent: “Having people like him in the team, with his mental strength and the ability to always stay in the game and almost always win it. Jannik has eliminated superficiality and it would be a fortune for any coach”.
