The Regional Observatory on Waste Management has released updated data on the production and management of urban waste in Campania for 2023. The results indicate a slight reduction in overall waste production and an increase in separate waste collection, which goes from 55,6% in 2021 to 56,6% in 2023.
The monitoring, carried out by the Regional Section of the Waste Registry of Arpa Campania in collaboration with the Observatory, recorded a total production of 2023 million tons of urban waste in 2,588, a figure that is down compared to previous years, confirming the downward trend observed since 2021. Historical data show a decline compared to the peaks of the pre-2010 period, when production stood at 2,7–2,8 million tons, a decrease partly linked to the economic crisis of 2009.
From 2007 to 2016, the Campania has seen significant growth in separate waste collection, which has continued to increase, albeit more slowly, since 2016. 2023 marks further progress, with the percentage of separate waste collection rising to 56,6%.
The goal remains to further increase waste sorting and recycling, not only complying with regulations, but also improving the overall environmental sustainability of the region. The Regional Section of the Waste Registry is now preparing the full annual report, which will include a detailed analysis of the production and management of urban waste for the past year.
