During the first quarter, the NAS Carabinieri of Salerno conducted an intensive food safety control operation, with a total of 287 inspections carried out in the Provinces of Salerno, Avellino and Benevento. Of these, 120 inspections revealed non-conformities. The investigative efforts focused mainly on the meat supply chain and the production, processing and trade of dairy, bakery and confectionery products.
207 checks were carried out in these sectors, finding irregularities in 95 cases. As a result, over 24 tons of food were seized, for a value of 146 thousand euros, and 182 fines were issued, for a total of over 61 thousand euros. In addition, 78 people were reported to the administrative authorities. During the inspections, eleven businesses had to temporarily suspend their operations due to serious hygiene and health deficiencies, found with the support of doctors from the competent ASL. Numerous warnings and prescriptions were issued to correct less serious deficiencies.
In addition, food samples were taken to verify compliance with the declarations on the label, with particular attention to the allergen content. Laboratory tests will allow for the evaluation of any violations. During the Easter holidays, control activities on typical products were intensified, with the seizure of 230 pastiere, confectionery products, chocolate, cured meats, cheeses and meat, without documentation certifying their origin.
