He was about to drown Marechiaro, in Naples, where almost every day he dives for a couple of strokes in the waters in front of the famous Palace of the Spirits: the director and screenwriter Anthony Capuano, 83 years old, was overwhelmed by the waves, but some young people reached him and saved him.
The bad experience dates back to last July 26th and Capuano was told today in Il Mattino. “I was hit by a wave. It looked like a mountain”, says Capuano, leader of a long line of Neapolitan directors, including an ever-grateful Paolo Sorrentino, and of the so-called Vesuvian school.
“I didn’t understand anything anymore. My energy had gone. My lungs were full of sea water, the doctors in the hospital told me. Afterwards, I hugged and kissed those who saved me. I’ve already started diving again.”
Those who saved him were some boys who were on the Posillipo rocks. The director is overwhelmed by the rough sea after a few strokes. He doesn't have the strength to resist and so he decides to let himself be carried by the waves. Seeing the young people, he waves his arms.
At first they think he was simply saying hello, then they realize he needed help. They dive, reach him and bring him to safety, placing him on a chair at the Porticciolo, waiting for the ambulance. The director of 'Polvere di Napoli, 'Luna Rossa' and many other films, celebrated by Sorrentino in 'E' stata la mano di Dio', has now recovered.
“When you feel like you own something, that's when it fucks you up”, has explained. “This rule always applies, especially at sea: I thought I would be able to face those waves, but no.”
