Chelsea striker and Australian national team captain Sam Kerr has been found not guilty of aggravated racial harassment for calling a British police officer “stupid and white”.
A jury at London's Kingston Crown Court reached its verdict after more than four hours of deliberation, clearing the footballer of any wrongdoing in the incident that occurred on January 30, 2023, in south-west London. Kerr, 31, and her partner, West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis, had been out for a drink when a taxi driver took them to Twickenham police station, complaining that he had not paid a cleaning fee after one of them had vomited and the other had smashed the car's rear window.
The striker was charged with abusing officer Stephen Lovell in an offensive manner. After the verdict, Kerr said in a statement: "I can finally put this difficult period behind me. I apologize for having expressed myself badly on a traumatic evening, but I never intended to offend or harm anyone. I am grateful that the jury recognized this unanimously".
