Serious episode of violence at the prison in Sulmona, where, yesterday afternoon, a inmate he attacked and threatened the Manager of the Institute, Stefano Liberatore.
The incident sparked a wave of solidarity and indignation, with the intervention of Giuseppe Merola, National Secretary of the Federation of Autonomous Trade Unions CNPP.“We express our unconditional closeness and solidarity to Director Liberatore – Merola declared – and we firmly condemn this aberrant episode. It is necessary to start an urgent reflection, both at political and institutional level, to guarantee the safety and protection of the entire penitentiary community”.
Merola underlined the professionalism of the staff working in the institute, but also launched a cry of alarm: “Staff cannot be continuously exposed to risks to their physical and psychological safety. Immediate and concrete interventions are needed, such as the transfer of prisoners responsible for serious episodes, in full compliance with current regulations”.
The episode relaunches the debate on prison safety and the need for adequate measures to protect those who work daily in such a delicate context.

This episode is very worrying, but I think it is also important to understand the causes of this violence. It is essential to find solutions to prevent similar situations from happening again, so that the staff can work safely.
