Confusing situation caused by the terror that her son was suffering from mental retardation, some of the child's behaviors had even convinced her that he could be autistic.
A visit with a child psychiatrist was scheduled for this morning, but perhaps it was precisely the terror of seeing one's fears confirmed that caused that blackout to culminate in an apparently inexplicable act: the drowning of one's 2-year-old son.
AG, 40, threw her son into the sea along La Scala beach in Torre del Greco. Rescue efforts were in vain, and there was nothing that could be done for the little boy. Questioned at length by the Carabinieri and the prosecutor of the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office, she was subjected to a detention order for suspicion of voluntary homicide.
"She is still in a state of shock," explained lawyer Tommaso Ciro Civitella, who assisted the woman during the interrogation. "What we hope is that the collection of evidence by the Prosecutor's Office can shed light on this tunnel that represents a human tragedy."
And he is keen to deny that "there were any suicidal intentions on the part of my client, just as I deny the fact that another person may have entered the crime scene, a rumour that has been circulating in the last few hours".
"The lady - he continues - went out for a walk with her son last night and, without any premeditation, once again entered this tunnel and no longer understood anything, finding herself with a lifeless baby in her arms".
