An episode of great promptness and courage occurred yesterday afternoon in Sant'Arsenio, where an elderly couple managed to foil an attempted telephone scam, allowing the arrest of two scammers thanks to the timely intervention of the police. The scam followed a now sadly well-known script: the criminals, pretending to be a Carabinieri marshal and a lawyer, contacted the couple claiming that their daughter had been involved in a serious road accident. To "help her", they asked for a sum of 12 thousand euros in cash, adding the possibility of also delivering jewelry to cover the necessary amount.
Immediately suspecting the scam, the elderly remained calm and with great cunning entertained the scammers on the phone for about 40 minutes, thus allowing them to alert the authorities. The one who intervened promptly was Marshal Vincenzo Giuliano of the Sant'Arsenio Municipal Police, who coordinated the operation with the Carabinieri Radiomobile Operations Unit of Sala Consilina.
While the scammers were waiting outside the house to collect the package containing the alleged money and jewelry, the police were already ready to act. The operation ended with the arrest of two individuals, an Italian and a foreigner, who had already been noticed in the previous days suspiciously hanging around the houses in the town.

I read the article and it seems to me that the elderly couple did well not to be fooled by scammers. It is important to always be careful and not to immediately trust the people who call, especially in these cases.
