Ercolano – He didn't count on the municipality's high-resolution electronic "eyes." Yesterday morning, a 47-year-old man originally from Torre del Greco but resident in Ercolano, already known to law enforcement, set fire to a pile of abandoned waste near the Via Gramsci bridge, then quickly fled.

The area—long under close monitoring as part of the measures envisaged by the 2015 inter-ministerial resolution for the Land of Fires—has been the scene of yet another illegal dumping.

Upon receiving the report, the Carabinieri of the Torre del Greco Company's Mobile Radio Section and the Ercolano Municipal Police officers immediately reviewed the municipal video surveillance footage: the images revealed the figure of a man with a large build, wearing a T-shirt and shorts, and a pair of white and green sneakers with the Nike logo clearly visible.

The return to the crime scene and the detail of the tattoo

The search continued until late afternoon, when officers returned to the scene for further investigation. Just then, a scooter approached with a passenger without a helmet. Upon seeing the patrol car, the man dismounted and attempted to flee on foot, but his attempt was unsuccessful. He was stopped and identified, and immediately attracted the officers' attention.

What gave him away were his shoes: he was wearing the exact same sneakers captured on camera when the fire started. Any remaining doubts were dispelled by an indelible mark on his skin: a tattoo of the name "Angela" on his right arm, which matched the images captured that morning to the millimeter. A coincidence reminiscent of Checco Zalone's famous hit, but with a decidedly different ending.

Arrest and fight against environmental crimes

At 18:30 PM, the arrest was made in deferred flagrante delicto. The 47-year-old will now face charges of illegal waste burning and has been placed under house arrest pending trial.

The operation once again highlights the effectiveness of the territorial video surveillance network and the strategic synergy between the Carabinieri and the Municipal Police in combating environmental crimes plaguing the Vesuvian area.
