Sorrento – Tragic accident at work: a worker cleaning the garden of the Episcopal Palace fell and died.

An investigation is underway into an incident that occurred this morning around 10:45 a.m. in the garden adjacent to Sorrento Cathedral. A man clearing infested plants and pruning trees fell from a wall and died instantly.

When the 118 doctors arrived on the scene, the worker was already lifeless.

The Sorrento Carabinieri arrived on the scene and are reconstructing the tragic accident and verifying whether safety regulations were respected.

The 64-year-old man, a resident of Massa Lubrense, died after falling from the perimeter wall of the internal courtyard of the Cathedral of Saints Philip and James. According to initial investigations, the man was likely clearing and removing weeds when, for reasons currently under investigation, he lost his balance and fell. The impact was fatal: the 64-year-old died instantly. Officers from the Torre Annunziata Investigative Unit arrived on the scene to conduct technical investigations.

Deepening

Working in a historic site is not only a matter of respect for the heritage, but also of safety. This morning's tragedy in Sorrento, where a worker fell from a wall in the garden of the Episcopal Palace, reminds us how delicate and dangerous interventions in historic contexts are. These environments, often characterized by ancient structures and spaces not always compliant with modern safety standards, require specific protocols and targeted training for those who work there. The fatal fall highlights the urgent need to strengthen preventative measures to protect those who work on heritage conservation without putting their own lives at risk. This is a rarely discussed but crucial issue, because prevention saves lives.

I'm sorry to hear the news, but it doesn't add up. It seems there were no fences and the worker was working alone without safety devices. The documents should establish responsibility; the Carabinieri will have to verify everything before passing judgment. Let's hope the authorities investigate and determine whether there was negligence or just a tragic accident, so the families can get clear answers.
