The meeting of the Rescue Coordination Center (CCS), convened in conjunction with the Prefecture of Naples following the collapse in the Vela Rossa area of ​​Scampia, has concluded.

Further technical inspections conducted by the Fire Department and municipal technicians ruled out any structural issues with the building at Via Pietro Gobetti 121, which was declared completely habitable. No static risks were identified, and by the evening, all families who had been evacuated as a precaution were able to return to their homes.

To ensure further safety for residents, a presence composed of firefighters, regional civil protection, and state police will remain operational overnight.

The municipal administration thanked the Prefecture, law enforcement, technicians, and volunteers involved in managing the emergency.

The Prosecutor's Office opens a file on the collapse

In parallel with the technical checks, the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to determine the causes of the collapse that occurred during the demolition of the Vela Rossa.

Investigators intend to clarify the circumstances of the incident and determine whether any culprits related to the work in progress were involved. The goal is to determine whether the collapse was caused by technical issues or possible errors in operational procedures.

Residents' story: "A sudden roar"

There were moments of great apprehension among local residents, who described the collapse as a sudden and particularly violent event.

“After the bang, the building rocked and we all ran out into the street, not understanding what had happened,” says Giovanni, a resident on the fifth floor of the building on Via Gobetti.

According to initial reports, the collapse affected six or seven floors of the structure being demolished. Despite the extent of the collapse, no injuries were reported, and damage to nearby buildings was deemed limited.

In total, around 300 people were evacuated as a precaution and gradually returned to their homes over the course of the day.

The demolition plan for the Vele di Scampia

The Vele di Scampia were built between the 1960s and 1970s as an innovative residential housing project. Of the seven original structures, five have already been demolished.

The Red Sail, affected by the collapse, had been under demolition since last December. The Blue Sail, destined to house public offices, has had a different fate.

The Vela Celeste itself was the site of a landing collapse two years ago in July, resulting in three deaths and eleven injuries. The recent incident has refocused attention on construction site safety and the management of demolition operations in the Scampia area.

I read this article and it seems strange. It's not very clear what happened at the Vela Rossa. The police and municipal technicians said everything was fine, but after the explosion, the building swayed and then collapsed. Perhaps the procedures were poorly done or the checks weren't sufficient.
