An unclear episode of violence rocked the upper Spanish Quarter of Naples last night. The target of the raid was Marco Vitiello, 48, a man already blacklisted from law enforcement records. He was struck by two bullets in the left leg while walking along Vico Mondragone.

The timing of the attack appears particularly significant: the attack occurred shortly after 19:00 PM, moments after Vitiello had left the Carabinieri station, where he had gone to sign in. Two individuals on a scooter reportedly approached the man, firing several shots before fleeing.

Rescue and first relief

Despite his injuries, the victim managed to escape back into the Spanish Quarter barracks to seek assistance. The officers present provided first aid while awaiting the arrival of emergency personnel. Vitiello was subsequently rushed to Pellegrini Hospital; although his condition is being monitored by paramedics, his life is not in imminent danger.

Soldiers from the Operations Unit of the Naples Central Company and the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Command intervened at the scene of the incident to carry out technical surveys and begin investigative activities.

The investigative hypotheses

The investigation is currently focused on reconstructing the motive. While personal disagreements have not been ruled out, investigators are focusing on the criminal underworld in the area.

The area is historically fragmented, with tensions reportedly pitting various local factions against each other for control of illicit activities, particularly those related to the urban nightlife. Recordings from the numerous video surveillance cameras in the area could provide crucial support in the search for those responsible. Investigators are already examining the footage to identify the motorcycle's escape route.
