Caserta – Fifty euros. This was the price Guido Roviello drew his last breath against, the fleeting price of a life trampled on the pavement of a Caserta square. When desperation hits rock bottom, coexistence among the most vulnerable transforms into a merciless Darwinian struggle, where a day's begging becomes sufficient motivation to unleash primal ferocity.

Yet, what's even more horrifying than the blood shed for a handful of coins is the complicit silence of passersby. As the shots rained down on the lifeless body of the sixty-year-old, some grabbed their smartphones to document the horror in real time, without anyone summoning the civil courage or human instinct to shout a halt, to step in, or to call for help.

The footage that nailed the alleged attacker—also homeless and of Romanian origin, like the victim—describes the brutal decline of our daily lives. The images show an unprecedented escalation of violence: a heated argument over that small sum of money, forcefully demanded, followed by the first blow that fells the victim.

What followed was a methodical attack: kicks to the chest and skull as Guido lay on the ground, culminating in the final act of lifting him up to deliver a final punch to the face. No sign of mercy on the pavement, neither from those who struck nor from those watching through the reassuring, detached lens of a screen.

Guido's parable: dignity and wounds

Behind the aseptic label of "tramp" lay the complex story of a gentle man. Guido, 62, originally from Romania but an integral part of the city's fabric for years, had experienced a different life behind the tables of restaurants where he worked as a waiter, before the loss of his job pushed him to the margins.

Despite the road, he didn't give up: he regularly attended the soup kitchen of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Community of Sant'Egidio, points of reference where he found refreshment, hot showers and, above all, a relational dimension that restored his dignity.

A sentence announced from the street

Guido's end reopened wounds that had never fully healed. He had already escaped a similar beating in 2019, suffering multiple fractures and being treated and rehabilitated thanks to the tireless efforts of the volunteers of "L'Angelo degli Ultimi," who allowed him to get back on his feet and find temporary shelter in Maddaloni.

The street, however, presents a relentless toll to those who have no defense. The second round of marginalization left them no appeal, leaving an indelible mark on the city: a death consumed for pennies and transformed into a spectacle by a silent crowd.

Guido was arguing with the man when he was suddenly punched, knocking him to the pavement. The attacker then relentlessly kicked him in the head and chest, finally lifting him up to deliver a final blow to the face. The videos also reveal a disturbing detail: none of the bystanders, including the videographer, lifted a finger to stop the murderous rampage.

Her murderer, on the orders of the deputy prosecutor of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Graziella Arlomede, is locked up in prison on charges of murder aggravated by futile motives.
